Is it save to hike the trail?

The people in the Kilimanjaro region are outgoing and very willing to help. While hiking there are many possibilities to get to know  the local people. Usually, locals feel honoured by visitors hiking through there region. The region of the Kilimanjaro is peaceful. During day light it is very safe and during night time it is simply not advisable to walk around as the trails are not marked and not visible in the dark.

It is more enjoyable to hike in a group or with a guide as this setting enriches your visit of the garden belt to a wide extend.

Young men like to approach visitors around the touristy places where the Kilimanjaro hikers cross the trail, for example in Marangu. These men claim to be voluntary guides and ask for a tip at the end of the toure. It is best to ignore those offers right from the beginning. In case you encounter constant trouble please talk to your guide about it. Please do not hand out money and other 'gifts' to locals. This encourages begging and disturbs the 'climate' along the way.

In case you are staying in a tent, please set your tent at a suitable camp site, see point accommodation. The Kilimanjaro's animal kingdom is not very dangerous any more. Nevertheless please be aware of the odd snake or scorpion when relaxing in nature. It is advisable to hike during day time only. Therefore please plan your trip accordingly. As there are no street lights trails are not visible during the night. We recommend reaching your destination before dusk.
